History

Die Welsh Open begannen ihre Geschichte als Amateur-Turnier für walisische Spieler! 1992 wurde das damals schon prestigeträchtige Turnier ein Ranking Event und wurde damit auch für alle anderen Spieler zugänglich! Seither findet sich außer Darren Morgan, der im ersten Ranking-Jahr gegen Stephen Hendry verlor und Mark Williams kein walisischer Spieler mehr unter den Finalteilnehmern! Das ursprünglich als Regal Welsh Open bekannt gewordene Turnier heißt seit dem Verbot der Tabakwerbung nur noch Welsh Open und damit zusammen mit den British Open, der UK Championship und der World Championship die längste ungebrochenen Namenstradition!
