2006 Peter Ebdon - Stephen Hendry 10-6

History

Eines der ältesten Turniere wurde 1977 als United Kingdom Snooker Championship ins Leben gerufen und von Super Crystalate, einem Snooker-Ball Hersteller gesponsert! Das rein britische Feld bestand aus 24 Teilnehmern, gespielt wurde im Blackpool Tower Circus! Der erste Champion war ein Ire, Patsy Fagan, der für seinen Sieg 2000 britische Pfund erhielt! Schon 1978 wurde das Turnier in die Preston Guild Hall verlegt, wo es für die nächsten 20 Jahre mit wechselnden Sponsoren bleiben sollte!
1983 fand eines der großen Finale statt! Alex Higgins stand im Finale gegen Steve Davis und konnte nach einem 7-0 Rückstand auf 11-11 verkürzen, bevor Steve Davis noch einmal zurückschlug und mit 15-14 in Führung ging! Aber Alex Higgins gewann dann doch noch die letzten beiden Frames zum Sieg!
Die UKC wurde immer als zweitwichtigstes Turnier nach der WM gesehen, da man in der Anfangszeit stets Best-of-19 und das Finale dann über 31 Frames spielte! Später wurden die Vorrunden-Spiele dann auf Best-of-9 reduziert, die späteren Runden auf Best-of-17!
Erst 1984 wurde das Turnier für alle Profis geöffnet und als Ranking-Turnier anerkannt! Seitdem verteilt es mehr Ranglisten-Punkte als alle anderen Turniere außer der Weltmeisterschaft.
1993 gewann Ronnie O´Sullivan die UKC als jüngster Spieler, der je ein Ranglisten Turnier gewinnen konnte!
1994 setzte Stephen Hendry die Rekordmarke von 7 Centuries in einem Finale und im darauf folgenden Jahr spielte er das erste im Fernsehen übertragene 147 der UK Championship. 1999 spielte er ein zweites Maximum vor TV Kameras während der UKC; diese beiden sind die einzigen im Fernsehen gezeigten 147 in diesem Turnier!
Durch einen Wechsel des Sponsors zog die UK Championship 1998 für 3 Jahre nach Bournemouth um und dann schließlich 2001 ins Barbican Centre in York!
2005 verließ die Trophäe erstmals Großbritannien als der 18jährige Chinese Ding Junhui den fast 30 Jahre älteren Steve Davis schlug! Ding war grade 4 Monate alt, als Steve Davis 1987 seine letzte UKC gewann!
2006 fand die UK zum vorerst letzten Mal in York statt! Peter Ebdon reihte sich in die Liste von nur 9 Spielern ein, die sowohl die UK Championship als auch die Weltmeisterschaft gewinnen konnten!
2007 findet die UK Championship erstmals in Telford statt!
