History

Der Grand Prix ist ein Profisnookerturnier. Es gehört zu den sieben Turnieren der Main Tour.

Das Turnier wurde 1982 als „Professional Players Tournament" von der WPBSA gegründet. Beim Auftakt bezwang Ray Reardon Jimmy White mit 10:5 und gewann dafür £5.000 Preisgeld.

1984 wurde "Rothmans" Sponsor des Turniers, das daraufhin in „Rothmans Grand Prix" umbenannt wurde und in Reading stattfand. In der Folgezeit gab es verschiedene Sponsoren und Namen des Turniers. 2001 übernahm „LG Electronics" das Sponsoring für drei Jahre, während dieser Zeit trug der Grand Prix dan Namen „LG Cup". 2004 hieß es nach dem neuen Sponsor „totesport Grand Prix".

2005 konnte kein offizieller Sponsor gefunden werden. In dieser Saison hieß das Turnier einfach "Grand Prix". Bis 2005 wurde es jedes Jahr als Saisonauftakt in der Guild Hall in Preston gespielt. Ab der Saison 2006/07 wird es von Royal London Watches gesponsert und findet in Aberdeen in Schottland statt und ist nunmehr das zweite Weltranglistenturnier der Saison nach der Northern Ireland Trophy beziehungsweise dem Shanghai Masters. Ein Novum ist 2006/07 eine erstmalig in einem Weltranglistenturnier ausgetragene Gruppenphase. In der Saison 2007/08 wurden die Weltranglistenpunkte, die beim Grand Prix vergeben werden, erhöht. Die Punktzahl ist nun 1,25-mal so hoch wie bei einem normalen Turnier. Dadurch steigt der Grand Prix zum drittwichtigsten Turnier der Snookersaison nach UK Championship und Weltmeisterschaft auf.

Die meisten Turniersiege erzielte der Schotte Stephen Hendry, der den Grand Prix viermal gewann.
