Barry Hearn, Chairman of the World Professional Billiards and Snooker
Association, saw his blueprint for snooker's future accepted by the sport's

tournaments for the coming season, including a quick-fire Shoot-Out event, a
ranking event in Germany, a World Seniors Championship and a Player Tour
Championship series.

Tales from the Circuit #3s (19.05.2010)
Overseas trips with snooker have always been fun, usually because no sooner
has the plane left the tarmac that something goes catastrophically wrong.
China is a country snooker players have had to get used to visiting in the last
decade. It has two ranking events with talks underway to convert the Jiangsu
Classic, currently an invitation tournament, into a third.
I recall two incidents from the 2002 China Open in Shanghai that sum up the way
British snooker players have had to adjust to life playing a long way from home.

Fears grow for Alex Higgins (18.05.2010)
Alex Higgins, the world champion in 1972 and 1982, is reported by several
media sources to be down to six stone and living on baby food after his teeth
fell out following radiotherapy treatment for throat cancer.
A website has been established asking for donations towards the £20,000 Higgins
needs for teeth implants. The 61 year-old speaks in a whisper due to the cancer.
Higgins did as much as anyone and more than most to elevate snooker from folk
sport to major television attraction.

New concerns over editing of Higgins sting video as fake website cover-up continues (18.05.2010)
As snooker’s governing body, the WPBSA, continues its inquiry into claims by
the News of the World that John Higgins agreed to fix frames, a new analysis of
the video evidence against Higgins published by the NotW suggests the footage
has not only been cut and edited without full context to suit the NotW’s story
but that some sub-titles are factually wrong and that some words presented as
attributable to Higgins do not appear to have been spoken by him.

Adventures in Snooker City (18.05.2010)
The number of people waiting for trains at London’s Kings Cross station was
reminding me of Penn Station back in New York City. I’m a native New Yorker, so
crowds do not usually cause concern. However, this Sunday crowd were more than
usual, as Volcanic Ash had resulted in a four day Airport shutdown. Everyone
stranded had been looking for alternative travel. As I looked up at the
Departures board, the 11:30 to Leeds was flashing “Fully Booked.” That was the
train I had booked tickets for two months ago. I could not sympathize with these
displaced travellers as I only had my final destination in mind-Sheffield.

Alex Higgins campaign deserves the urgent support of snooker (17.05.2010)
There have been tribute nights before. Friends have also previously rallied
to his aid at difficult moments. And there have certainly been plenty of crises
and health scares.
Yet it is doubtful whether even Alex ‘Hurricane’ Higgins – snooker’s most
charismatic personality – has faced a more acute hour of need. Friends and
family have become extremely concerned for the 61 year-old’s well-being and are
now attempting to raise funds for an operation he desperately needs for a new
set of teeth.

immerhin zwei Kugeln gefallen.

"Pocket Dynamo" Dott, 33, credits childhood sweetheart Elaine, 28, for bringing
him back from the depths of despair. But she had feared their fairytale life was
gone forever as he retreated into himself following the death of her dad - his

And last night, Elaine revealed how the triple blow turned Graeme into a shadow

How the News of the World's fake sheikh snookered John Higgins (10.05.2010)
I must admit that I read the News of the World's snooker bribes scandal a
week ago and thought how foolish John Higgins must have been to have got
involved. Why agree to fix a couple of frames in exhibition matches for a bribe
that, given his overall earnings from the sport, seemed like small beer?
Then again, I couldn't help but notice that the "world exclusive" sting
operation was the work of our old friend, Mazher Mahmood (aka the fake sheikh),
so I also looked between the lines.

John Higgins strongly denies match-fixing as new allegations emerge (09.05.2010)
The snooker player John Higgins said today he will "vigorously defend"
himself in the face of allegations he agreed to fix a match and again insisted
he that is "100% innocent". The Scot said in a statement that the past few days
had been "emotionally draining for me and my family".
"In the last week I have experienced a whole range of emotions: despair,
frustration, anger, rage and most of all a sense of betrayal."

Tom English: 'Higgins is stupid, that's a given. But he is not a match-fixer' (09.05.2010)
All these match-fixers at play; the dopers in so many different sports, the bung-merchants in football, the ball-tamperers in cricket, the trainers and jockeys who stop horses from winning, the blood capsule specialists in rugby, the snooker players who throw matches, the guys who sanctioned a Formula One driver to deliberately crash his car into a barrier so as to gain advantage for a team-mate....
...Higgins' behaviour should trouble us greatly, but so, too, should the level of entrapment at work. The News of the World spent fortunes getting Higgins to Kiev. They set up meetings – one lasting seven hours – with his, frankly, stupid manager, Pat Mooney. They created websites to convince Mooney that they were genuine in their wish to fund new tournaments on his World Series circuit. They put fake stories on their fake websites to make themselves look authentic. They flew their targets to Ukraine and arranged that they be swept through customs in rapid order and into the back of waiting cars. This was a heavily financed sting operation, a vast set-up. They got out of Higgins an admission that he would be prepared to throw a frame in an exhibition match for money. Not a ranking event, not a tournament of any merit, a challenge match...
...There are nuances to this that should make us pause before finding Higgins
guilty of match-fixing. He is monumentally stupid, that's a given. But he is not
a match-fixer. Higgins appears to agree to lose four separate frames in four
separate exhibition tournaments in unspecified locations at unspecified times in
the future. Losing one frame in a match is not match-fixing. It's immoral, and
it is a form of cheating, but it is not as cut and dried as the News of the
World would have us believe....

Steve Davis interview – 'Some people got angry, I got emotional (08.05.2010)
It was one of the great sporting moments. Steve Davis, 52-year-old has-been,
face ghostly white, giant bags under his eyes, had to pot four balls to beat the
world champion John Higgins. The green left him with a tricky brown. He winced
as if he was about to throw-up. Then he did something Davis has never done. He
took a chance, and doubled the brown. It went in. Then he did another thing he's
never done before. He broke into an involuntary skip – more a spasm, really. He
kept his nerve and potted the blue and pink. And then he fell to his knees,
looked up to the crowd and repeatedly patted his head in disbelief. The
six-times world champion was in the quarter-finals for the first time in 20
years. His eyes were teary, his voice croaky, and he was in pieces.
